CCSSA is an INCREDIBLE COMMUNITY!

OUR MEMBERS ARE AUTHORS!

Our very own Henry Schipper has finished his book of baseball poems, many of which he wrote in his head while manning left field (this accounts for his erratic fielding). It's called "The Ball Dream of the Sky," and it's on Amazon now. It's really cool. Here's the link to check it out: Henry's book

Honoring Fred Brown

Our Beloved Freddie Brown passed away in July of 2025

Fred Brown’s interment was held on Friday, August 8th, 2025 at The Los Angeles National Cemetery.

Wow I am sorry for the loss, he was a great man - C.A.

When Freddie played on another team against me, he always let me know what time the game started. Always an hour or two later than when it actually started. He will be missed. RIP - J.C.

Condolences: T.W., P.K., P.C.

Of all the people in this league and I'd been in the league about 10 years, his heart was the biggest he was the sweetest kindest guy. And I'll miss him, dearly, we'll all miss him in. I'm just sad, that's all I can say - D. L.

No words other than many very fond memories. B.K.

I’m so sorry. He was a good good man. G.W.

Freddie always was a nice guy. I always had pleasant conversations with him. He had an interesting life. Culver City, senior Softball lost one of the good ones today. My sympathy go to his friends and all his family. - A.S.

This is heartbreaking. Very sad. I've already been missing Freddie being at the field when I arrive. Now the league will be missing him at every game - S.S.

So sorry to hear this news. Freddy was someone who made me feel welcome when I joined the league 3 years ago. He included me in the jokes that I was sometimes too young to understand. But he didn’t stop there. He shared his past affiliation and experiences with the Dodgers with pride. I was always willing to listen. He and his jolly smile will be missed. May he rest in peace.-JT.M.

I first met Fred shortly after I joined the league and showed up at Saturday batting practice. Fred was minding the signup sheet and I introduced myself as “Pittsburgh Bill”, a moniker hung on me to differentiate. And also because she likes to call people names. Fred took great delight in that disclosure and launched into extended memories of the 1970s Pirates, which were pretty much the last decent memories of the Pittsburgh Baseball Club. He worked in the Dodgers equipment office then, deployed to the visitors’ clubhouse. He was the one that loaded and unloaded the baggage to and from the airport and catered to the players’ needs before and after games. He was also the one who escorted the likes of the late Doc Ellis and the late (and soon to be HOF inductee) Dave Parker along with other party-harders of those legendary Pirates teams on their crawl of Sunset Boulevard nightclubs (Fred, of course, remaining sober and discreet at the car). Fred to the very end was a fund of stories about MLB players he had met and the CCSSA softball community he cherished. He was an “unforgettable character” to borrow a trope from the old Readers Digest. - B.T.

For years Freddy worked hard to keep us going every week. He took pride in providing the equipment at each game to make sure we could play.  Never failing to perform in all those years.  Fred was loved by all of us. - G.B.
